Finally, I have finished watching 汉武大帝 yesterday and returned both set of VCDs to the rental store. I was lucky that they overlooked the penalty as the return was one day overdued. Well, perhaps I was their regular customer. LOLX
Anyway, it's a great serial and I like it very much, although the ending was quite a sorrowful one. There's this song towards the end of the drama which really moved me. It's a sad song by the way.. and it kept playing in my mind whenever I recalled certain sad parts of this drama. It's called 千百年後誰還記得誰 in Traditional Mandarin. Basically, this Han Emperor of ancient China, who drove the Xiongnus out of his empire, grew arrogant and mentally paranoid towards the later years of his reign. This fueled the decline of his officials' trust in his authority. As a result, after the death of his most trusted general, Wei Qing, Emperor Wu of the Han suffered many bitter losses, though not militarily. His empire's resources were depleted due to huge expenditure for the ceaseless battles against the Xiongnus. His people were driven to poverty and starvation due to the raised taxes. His officials, though in minority, plotted against him and his son, Prince Ju. His old age and poor health hindered his sole administration of state affairs, which caused him to make wrong decisions resulting in the death of the crown prince as well as his Empress. When he finally realised he had been deceived by treacherous officials, it was already too late.
This serial is worth watching if you are interested in Chinese history. Here's the video where the song was played as an interlude.
